LIMASSOL - European City of Sport
The Limassol Mayor, Nicos Nicolaides, was awarded the European City of Sport title over a special ceremony organised by the ACES EUROPE (European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation) at the European Parliament in Brussels. The Mayor was accompanied by the Chairman of the Youth and Sport Committee and Municipal Councillor, Mr Loizos Mavroudes. The ceremony was attended and addressed by, inter alia, the European Commissioner for Sport, Mrs Mariya Gabriel, a UNESCO representative and others. The MEPs Lefteris Christoforou, Loukas Fourlas, Giorgos Georgiou, Niyazi Kizilyurek, Costas Mavrides and Demetris Papadakis were also present at the ceremony. It should be noted that several of our compatriots that visited Brussels as that time also attended the ceremony.
Awarding and congratulating the Limassol Mayor on the title, the ACES EUROPE President, Mr Gian Francesco Lupattelli, welcomed Limassol as the first Cyprus city in the European Sports Cities Network, and praised Limassol’s sports programs and policies. The Mayor thanked the Federation for the award, stating that this title is both an incentive and a challenge for the Limassol Municipality when it comes to improving and promoting sports events in Limassol for the benefit of all citizens. Earlier, the Mayor posted on his personal Facebook account: “Well done to all those who worked hard for this title. We dedicate this title to all our fellow citizens and especially to the leading Limassol athletes who keep enriching the sporting history of our city”.
