Limassol Carnival 2020 Press Conference
This year’s Carnival press conference was held on 13 February 2020 at noon at the EPSILON Resto Bar in Limassol Marina. During the conference, this year’s King of Carnival, “King Lemesios, the Maharaja of the city” was presented to the public, while reference was made to the program and the new elements introduced to enrich the festivity.
In his speech, Limassol deputy Mayor Nicos Sykas- filling in for the Mayor – explained to the attendees the reasons for his absence and mentioned that the Mayor’s efforts to upgrade the Carnival further motivate us to achieve this year’s goal. He said that this is the 2nd year of implementation of the Carnival Strategic Plan that aims to upgrade the Limassol Carnival and that the improvements made every year add substantial value to both our city and Cyprus in general.
Carnival is the biggest folk celebration in our country, the events of which offer 11 days filled with fun, laughter and positive emotion. As an integral part of our culture and tradition, all Limasssol Carnival events are always free of charge for everybody, thus creating a sense of optimism and equality for all citizens.
Children are placed at the epicentre of the festivity, since one of this year’s innovations is the marching of the King’s float down the coastal avenue during the Children’s Parade which is to be held on Sunday, 23 February.
The Grand Parade, which will take place on 1 March, will feature 120 groups of which 95 will have their own floats. This year’s participants are expected to exceed 25.000 and the Limassol Municipality will parade once again with its own satirical floats. The officials’ movable grandstands will be expanded to 100 metres and placed outside the Lanitio Sports Centre, while this year a 50-metre movable grandstand will be installed elsewhere along the route to accommodate families and children. Furthermore, improvements have also been made to the sound transmitted from speakers.
This year, the King Carnival and his entourage will attend all major Carnival events. The young Majorettes of the Cyprus Girl Guides Association will participate at this year’s Children’s Choirs event, while on Thursday’s Carnival Ball at the Medieval Castle tribute will be paid to Loukianos Kilaidonis.
Finally, the deputy Mayor expressed his gratitude to this year’s Carnival sponsors, the Carnival Committee, the Municipal Officers and the hundreds of volunteers without the help of whom this festivity would be impossible to organise. He also thanked PNS restaurants and particularly the EPSILON Resto Bar for hosting the press conference.
