Measures to prevent mosquito bites

28-03-2019

The Limassol Municipality, recognising the public’s concern when it comes to the increased numbers of mosquitoes due to this year’s heavy rains, announces that:

  1. The Municipality started spraying against mosquitoes using bio-chemicals in all possible mosquito hatching areas as well as in places where there is stagnant water throughout the Municipality, focusing on rivers, streams, drains etc.
  2. In cooperation with the Health Services of the British Bases and the Ministry of Health a plan of action has been drawn up and is being implemented to fight the proliferation of mosquitoes in western Limassol with additional measures and staff.
  3. This year, the Municipality has started removing wild vegetation from open spaces/ plots earlier than usual, while clean-ups are planned in areas bordering on streams.

The Municipality calls on the public to contribute to the elimination of this problem by taking the following measures at their own premises and at open spaces in their possession.

  • Remove stagnant water
  • Remove any objects which may collect water, such as bottles, old tyres, flower pots and other containers, from their gardens
  • Replace sewerage coverage and make sure they are hermetically sealed
  • Place wire mesh on ventilation pipes of sewerage systems
  • Repair/ replace destroyed or rusted water tanks and ensure they are well sealed
  • Clear gutters to ensure they do not retain water
  • In cases where there are swimming pools, the public should make sure that the necessary maintenance procedures are being followed.

Finally, the Municipality calls on the public to install mosquito screens on doors and windows and to use mosquito nets or approved mosquito repellents to protect themselves from mosquito bites.
