Limassol Municipality draws the line on pollution, hefty fines for dereliction
The Municipality of Limassol announces that as of today those polluting the city will pay hefty extrajudicial fines. Fines start at €200 for natural persons, while for companies they start at €500 and can reach up to €4000. It should be noted that according to the Waste Management Law of 2011 to 2016, in case of non compliance no warning ticket will be issued like before but a proper fine.
To this end, the Municipality’s inspectors, either following a complaint or otherwise, will be conducting regular daily checks in all areas of the city for:
a) packaging waste (category 15): paper/ cardboard, metal, plastic, class, aluminium etc.
b) municipal waste (category 20): pruning, bulky waste (furniture, DIY items, paper/ cardboard, metal, plastic, glass, aluminium, etc)
c) construction and demolition waste (category 17): concrete, bricks, tiles, sanitary ware, etc.
d) waste not otherwise specified in the list – end of life tyres (category 160103) : tyres
In the event of illegal activity, the inspector will ask the offender (natural person or company) to comply accordingly and within the time frame deemed appropriate by the inspector. Individuals who don’t comply will be fined €200 and companies €500. Failure to comply or continuing and repeating the offense will result in the increase of the fine to €400 for natural persons and €1000 for companies. Prior to these measures, fines were set at €85. However, until now the Municipality only issued warning tickets.
