Flood protection projects have started and are completed before the end of 2023

Limassol will have integrated flood prevention before the Winter of 2023, by the completion of the relevant works that will contribute substantially to the elimination of the problem of floods in the town. This was pointed out by Mr Nicos Nicolaides the Mayor of Limassol and Chairman of the Sewerage Board of Limassol – Amathus during his inspection of the works of the large Flood Prevention  Project for Greater Limassol, at Aretousa street at the New Ekali area of the Municipality of Limassol.

The Mayor of Limassol pointed out that this is the first of a series of projects costing 35.0 million euro that relate to the flood prevention projects for Greater Limassol. “Effectively after all these years, finally the flood prevention works that will shield the town are under way, with a deadline for completion before the winter of 2023”.Said Mr Nicolaides.

The particular project which will cost 16.2 million euro (plus VAT) is funded by the Sewerage Board of Limassol – Amathus and by the Government, and was assigned to the company IACOVOU-ZEMCO (SL) JOINT VENTURE. This project expands into the five municipalities that are within the boundaries of the Sewerage Board of Limassol-Amathus, and provides for the construction of pipes that cover an area of more than 20 kilometres, of piped drains to a length of 18.0 kilometres, square drains to a length of 3.0 kilometres and 423 manholes. 

Mr Nicos Nicolaides explained that to this project the other major project that concerns the protection of the city centre will soon be added, the works of which will start within the year and its cost will reach 6.0 million euro.This project provides for the construction of a network for rain-water, starting  from Anexartisias street, Agias Fylaxeos street, Leontiou street, Navarinou street, Thesallonikis street and will also cover some other areas. The third project that will follow, will cover the Evagoras Lanitis street and the works will start during the next year. Totally, for the flood prevention protection of Limassol, there will be works carried out to the sum of 35.0 million euro up to 2023. 

“Our town will gradually enjoy the benefits of these flood prevention projects, particularly these that apply to the centre of town, but we will have full protection before the winter of 2023”, The Mayor of Limassol noted.
