Limassol Municipality to upgrade its cycling infrastructure
The Limassol Municipality, participating as a regional partner in the Interreg / Medcities Network actions of the European Program SUMPORT, announces the completion of the planning process and the beginning of the construction process of a new bicycle route linking the two existing ones that end up at the Limassol Marina (east) and at the vertical road (west) to the new harbor, in combination with a bus station.
The program, which was launched in January 2017, and is expected to be completed in October 2019, has as its main purpose the implementation of sustainable mobility in port cities.
Following a bidding process, a project office has been selected to draft the study for the siting of the appropriately signposted cycling infrastructure to be built on part of the existing pavements. The infrastructure will be accessible to cyclists without restrictions and will eventually lead to a continuous cycling network along Limassol.
The new cycling route will link the one already built on the vertical road to the western boundaries of the city, with the existing one stopping at Limassol Marina. The design provides for the cycling route of Miaiaouli - Kavazoglou Street to be linked to the one of Dimokratias Street and the one of the Garylli River linear park which are being constructed or have already been completed within the framework of the co-financed urban regeneration projects.
Additionally to the implementation of other projects planned in the area in the near future, Limassol will be able to enjoy a comprehensive and attractive network of bicycle lanes / routes, thus further promoting another Sustainable Mobility project.
The project execution contract has already been signed between the Municipality and the Construction Company, with the latter having already commenced the project on Monday, 20/05/2019. The project is expected to be implemented over a period of three months.
