The Limassol Municipality promotes organic waste composting

18-06-2019

On 14 June, 2019, the Limassol Municipality and Incotech signed a contract on the design and implementation of a system for sorting at source and the acquisition, installation and operation of ACM (automatic composting machines) systems, in the presence of the President of the European Affairs Committee and Incotech representatives. The present contribution amounting to €164.500 is co-funded by the European Union (ERDF) and National Resources of Greece and Cyprus and is part of the ACUA Program INTERREG V-A Greece-Cyprus 2014-2020, in which the Municipality of Limassol participates as a partner.

Following a thorough analysis to identify the optimal points for the installation of the Automatic Composting Machines, the Municipality has shortlisted certain locations through which the objectives of the project are to be achieved. These points are located in or near the Seaside Multifunctional Park of the Municipality, where produced organic waste can be disposed of and which are attended by a lot of people on a daily basis and who will thus be informed on the composting process. Furthermore, the installation points are within walking distance of the Municipal Garden, where produced organic waste can also be disposed of.

The units will be placed on concrete and will be fenced, while a special access system will only give access to those entitled. The trash compactors to be placed in the Municipality will process bio-waste of selected restaurants that have expressed their interest to participate in the program, in a 100% biological and natural way. The high quality compost produced can be used as a fertiliser to cover part of the needs of the Municipality’s green areas.
