Limassol Municipality steps up flood prevention measures
Limassol Municipality steps up preventive measures to reduce risk and adequately respond to extreme weather conditions. The measures were discussed during a meeting held between the Mayor of Limassol, the Mayors of Municipalities of the wider area of Limassol and competent bodies of the city.
“The experience of recent years has shown that special attention is needed when it comes to extreme weather phenomena, which are becoming all the more frequent”, Mr Nicolaides said. He stated that during the meeting, information was provided on the progress of flood prevention works in the wider area of Limassol and in the city centre, and that the SBLA has already invited tenders for the works in question. Additionally, other projects of a smaller-scale are being promoted on a local level, on the basis of the experience of recent years. Continuing, the Mayor stressed that until the completion of the works, it is very important to implement the preventive measures that are part of the plan to deal with emergencies, and that actions must be taken prior and during any extreme weather events.
The following precautionary measures were decided:
• Clearing of storm drains
• Marking of storm drains
• Flood protection projects of local importance (erection of protective fencing)
• Public information campaigns
• Implementation of a new online extreme weather monitoring system by the SBLA.
• Delivery of 1500 sandbags to civil defence
• Inspection of areas prone to flooding based on the experience of previous years
The actions to be taken prior, during and immediately after any extreme weather event were carefully considered during the meeting. The immediate provision of assistance to those affected by such events was also taken into consideration.
