How to keep safe in extreme weather conditions
In light of the upcoming adverse weather conditions and according to the forecast of the Department of Meteorology, a new wave of extreme cold weather will hit our region and is expected to bring stormy winds, heavy rainfall and snowfall in the mountains.
The Limassol Municipality in cooperation with other Limassol Municipalities, the District Administration, the SBLA and other competent departments are in a high state of readiness to respond promptly to the effects of such events.
The Limassol Municipality urges all citizens to be particularly careful, take self-protection measures and remain indoors when in areas with heavy rainfall, thunderstorms or strong winds until the end of the phenomenon.
At the same time, citizens are invited to take all preventive measures required to keep their premises, residences, shops or warehouses safe from heavy rainfall.
Severe weather safety tips:
i. Residents or businesses located south of Makarios III Avenue must avoid dumping waste or recyclable materials in public or other places due to strong winds and adverse weather conditions on Sunday night, 5.1.2020.
ii. Citizens should check the storm drains are located in front of, near or even opposite their premises to make sure they are free from any obstacle and that natural flow is not obstructed in any way.
iii. They should secure objects which, if carried away by severe weather, may cause injury or damage.
iv. They should not leave scattered building materials or objects on sidewalks or open spaces or rivers. All contractors are urged to take extra measures to make sure that objects will not be moved due to strong winds.
v. They should avoid crossing streams and torrents during thunderstorms and rainfalls, as well as for several hours after the end of the event.
vi. They should avoid rural activities during a hail storm and take refuge in a building or in a car. They should only leave the safe area when they are sure that the storm has passed. Hail can also be very dangerous for animals.
vii. They should avoid walking under large trees, signboards and generally in areas where light objects (e.g. pots, broken glass etc.) can fall on them (ex. Under balconies)
viii. They should follow the instructions of local authorities, such as Traffic Police etc.
