The Limassol Carnival enters a new era with impressive innovations

22-01-2019

In a spectacularly decorated hall at Panos Solomonides Municipal Cultural Centre, the Mayor of Limassol, Nicos Nicolaides presented the brand new logo of the Limassol Carnival at a press conference held today.

The emblem is a combination of the two (2) elements that make up the Limassol Carnival: Our city, depicted by the lion representing the Municipality, and fun, expressed by the music of the Serenaders. “We came to this logo”, the Mayor said, “which came out of the history of the Limassol Carnival and is fresh, modern and timeless”.

This year’s Queens of Carnival - the well-known Limassolians and Carnival lovers - Monica Pieridou and Maria Nicolaides Afamis were presented to the public. This royal duet was chosen to embody the institution since they epitomize the diptych of the Limassol Carnival: fun and madness.

In addition to the logo, the Mayor of Limassol also announced a series of innovations for this year’s Carnival.

On 22 February, all Parade Participants will be presented at the Pattihio Municipal Theatre and the best serenade song of last year’s Serenade Composition Competition will be awarded.

It was also announced that the preliminary study on the creation of the Limassol Carnival Museum at the premises of the Panos Solomonides Cultural Centre was completed. The Municipality aims, following an approval by the Municipal Council, at presenting the study to the public at a future stage.

The Mayor further mentioned that the Limassol Municipality, in an effort to enhance the Limassol Carnival, by exploiting its enormous commercial potential as a carnival with a global reach, will hold a special event for potential sponsors to present all sponsorship packages for this year’s Carnival.

The Mayor proceeded to add that efforts made to revive giant props and satirical chariots and give prominence to traditional elements of the carnival are being reinforced this year.

To conclude, the Mayor of Limassol stated that the Municipal Council continuously strives to breathe new life into the Limassol Carnival, always with respect and dedication to its long tradition and history. He particularly stressed the fact that these efforts are carried out in consultation and an open dialogue with the Carnivalists.
