10-08-2020

We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the Limassol Municipal Dance Centre’s Artistic Director, Lambros Lambrou.

The internationally renowned dancer and choreographer from Limassol was born on 30 January 1956. Following his studies at the Arts Educational School and at the Royal Ballet School in London, he set out to pursue his dance career at world-famous dance companies such as the Alberta Ballet in Canada, where he was the principal choreographer for years, before serving as the artistic director of Ballet Austin in the USA.

Upon his repatriation to Cyprus, he worked as the Artistic Director of the Limassol Municipal Dance Centre, which was established in 2006 to provide vocational dance training to talented students. In the 14 years of its operation under the direction of Lambros Lambrou, the Municipal Dance Centre marked a new era in the cultural history of the city, putting Limassol in the spotlight of the dance scene. The annual performances staged by Lambros Lambrou, in which students of the Municipal Dance Centre performed alongside prominent soloists from abroad, are to be remembered for their ingenuity and originality and are considered as one of Limassol’s annual cultural institutions. The Dance Centre also provided the opportunity to students to attend summer dance seminars under the supervision of Lambros Lambrou, through which intensive dance training was offered to young people from all over Cyprus. A great number of the Centre’s talents were channelled to renowned universities abroad, while many of these former students excel today as soloists in renowned European ballet companies or in Cyprus.

The Mayor, Nicos Nicolaides, the Municipal Council and the staff of the Municipality of Limassol express their sorrow and sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. Lambros Lambrou’s work will always be reflected in the multitude of students that graduated from the Municipal Dance Centre to become dancers and choreographers. His memory will forever live on since his offering is part of the city’s collective consciousness.
