EUROPE DAY

9-05-2020

Europe Day is held every year on the 9th of May and celebrates peace and unity in Europe. In the aftermath of World War II, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, along with Jean Monnet set out their idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable.

The Limassol Municipality has benefited greatly from the accession of our country to the EU. With the contribution of Structural Funds and European programs, a great number of important infrastructure projects has been implemented or is currently being implemented.

Each year, our Municipality celebrates this Day with a number of events held at the multifunctional seaside park. Unfortunately, this year, due to the extraordinary measures taken to deal with the pandemic, the realisation of the celebrations is not possible. The European Commission is coordinating a common European approach to combat the virus. Decisive action is taken to strengthen public health and mitigate the socio-economic impact on the EU. The Commission mobilises all the means at its disposal to help Member States coordinate their national measures to address the situation, provide objective information on the spread of the virus and make effective efforts to restrain it.

This year’s Europe Day is different. We stay home, we stay safe, but we also stay focused on what makes us feel proud to be part of this big European family. Let us remember together all that unites us, the meaning of Europe Day and what we celebrate – solidarity, multiculturalism, pride in our common history and ideals.
