“P+R” concept implemented

16-09-2020

“European Mobility Week 20202” could not start with a better way than with the inauguration of the first Park-and-Ride facilities for the city centre, a service provided by the Municipality in collaboration with EMEL (Limassol Passenger Transport Company).

“The Park-and-Ride concept was attempted on several occasions, both in our city and in other cities in Cyprus, without however the desired outcome. I believe that current circumstances allow for the establishment of this institution” said the Mayor of Limassol, Nicos Nicolaides.  “As of today, citizens can benefit from cheap parking and easy access to the city centre”, added the Mayor emphasizing that “this small gesture constitutes a big step for public transport in Limassol. During peak hours, citizens will be able to board a minibus every 15 minutes that will transfer them to the heart of the city centre”, he pointed out before boarding together with Municipal Counsellors, CUT representatives and journalists an EMEL minibus to realise the first route of the Shuttle-Bus-Service. The next step, as mentioned by the Mayor, is to add two more parking spaces to the programme, namely one to the east of the city centre (Enaerios) and one to the west (Ayios Antonios area). These three stations, along with a number of multi-storey car parks “can be an effective park-and-ride system that will reduce traffic congestion”.

Citizens can now park free of charge at the municipal parking lot “Epaminondas”, west of Voreiou Ipirou street (where the outdoor market is held on Saturdays) and then board a minibus that will take them to the city centre as part of the Shuttle-Bus-Service offered by the Municipality. It should be noted that the Mayor will propose to the Minister of Transport that students use this service free of charge.
