20-01-2026

The path to climate neutrality shaping the cities of tomorrow

At a time when the climate crisis and the demand for sustainable, resilient, and smart urban development are at the forefront of the European agenda, Limassol is positioning itself as a benchmark for the transition to a greener and more sustainable urban future. In this context, the Limassol Municipality is organising the International Conference “Climate Neutral Blue Cities by 2030: Accelerating Local Change under the EU Cities and Ocean Missions – Limassol on the Path to Climate Neutrality.” The conference will take place on the 19th and 20th of March 2026 at The Warehouse by IT Quarter in Limassol, under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026.

The event takes place under the European Mission for 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030 and with the support of the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters,” brings together European and local leaders, policymakers, the academic and research community, local authorities, the private sector including investors, non-governmental organizations, civil society, and other stakeholders. It aims to explore ways in which port and coastal cities can accelerate their transition towards climate neutrality.

The conference’s main pillars

The two-day conference covers a wide range of topics aligned with recent European policies, such as the EU Mission Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030 and the EU Mission Restore Our Ocean and Waters by 2030. Key themes include the decarbonisation of ports and their integration into the urban fabric, sustainable urban mobility, renewable energy systems, smart grids and energy communities, as well as the provision of green energy for ships.

The conference also places strong emphasis on coastal resilience and climate adaptation, social cohesion and energy justice, affordable housing, as well as the role of the New European Bauhaus in the design of public spaces and sustainable urban aesthetics.

In addition, the conference examines the financial instruments and investment models that can support climate-neutral cities, with a focus on public–private partnerships, as well as collaborative, mission-oriented governance models that bring together cities, ports, businesses, research institutions, and civil society.

Why participate

Participation in the conference offers unique learning and networking opportunities with leading representatives of the European Commission, Mission Cities, national authorities, research institutions, industry, investors, and civil society organisations.

Participants will gain practical insights into the implementation of policies and projects, understand how public and private funding can be mobilised for climate-neutral investments, and actively contribute to shaping the policies and partnerships that will define the future of European cities by 2030.

The conference is expected to attract strong local, regional, and international interest, hosting leading figures from governance, policymaking, research, and key economic sectors, while strengthening Limassol’s role as a reference point for climate neutrality and sustainable urban development in Europe.
