Two co-financed projects reach the final stage

28-12-2020

Limassol is changing with new life being breathed into its western neighbourhoods. European funding has greatly contributed to the Municipality’s urban regeneration project of run-down neighbourhoods which includes the restoration of building facades, the rehabilitation of worn-out roads, paving and the construction of bike lanes.

Two such co-financed projects falling into the framework of the 2014 – 2020 programming period and which have reached the final stage are the Extension of Garyllis Linear Park – organic connection with the seafront along the Pallados/ Demokratias/ Alexandrias streets and the Green Walk to the religious, historical and architectural monuments of the city centre’s western section.

- Extension of Garyllis Linear Park – organic connection with the seafront along the Pallados/ Demokratias/ Alexandrias streets

The renovation project concerning the Pallados, Demokratias and Alexandrias streets, as well as the construction of a pedestrian street along the Garyllis riverbed, has entered the final stretch. The first two phases (Alexandrias street and western part of Demokratias street) have been completed, while by the end of the year the eastern part of Demokratias street will be delivered. The works on Pallados street, namely the final phase of the project, are expected to be completed by the middle of next year. The above roads form the main road network of the area and have a total length of about 1600 meters.

The project includes the creation of two lanes (to the north from the intersection of Makarios III Avenue with Pallados street, and to the south with the intersection of Alexandrias street with the coastal front – Carnagio (boatyard)), a bicycle path, sidewalks and parking spaces. Additionally, the project includes the creation of green spaces, modern street lighting, underground utilities, road signs, a rainwater harvesting system and other necessary services that will completely transform the area and improve the residents’ quality of life.

The total cost of the project amounts to €3,500,000 and is included in the projects co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, the Operational Program “Competitiveness and Sustainable Development” – priority axis “Sustainable Urban Development” of the 2014-2020 programming period, National Resources and Municipal Funds.

- Green Walk to the religious, historical and architectural monuments of the city centre’s western section.

The second project is that of the “Green Walk” which will contribute to the organic connection of the western neighbourhoods with the city centre, the reduction of traffic congestion and the attractiveness of the area. It will also contribute to the upgrade of the built environment and will improve the inhabitants’ quality of life. This project will link the city centre area with the Garyllis Linear Park, Limassol Marina and the old port, thus revitalising an environmentally degraded and socially isolated area despite its abundant and incomparable architectural, historical and religious heritage.

In particular, the urban development intervention in the western districts of the city centre aims to highlight the multicultural importance of the region and to create conditions of sustainable development to support the implementation of the vision “Limassol 2020”, for a friendly and attractive city for social, environmental and business activities.

Through this project, which will be completed within the year, religious, historical and architectural monuments of the city centre will be connected by means of thematic routes. At the same time, a software will be developed so that users can download on their smartphones and tablets all the relevant architectural, historical, cultural, religious, tourist information with reference to the Green Walk and the area in general. Also, a pedestrian and bike path is being constructed, while trees will be planted and a new lighting system will be installed so that citizens and visitors get to enjoy the beauty of the area in the evening without worrying for their safety.

It is noted that the study and supervision of the project was undertaken by the Technical Services of the Municipality of Limassol. The total cost of the project amounts to approximately €2,400,000 and is included in the projects co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, the Operational Programme “Competitiveness and Sustainable Development” – priority axis “Sustainable Urban Development” of the 2014-2020 programming period, National Resources and Municipal Funds.
