The great benefactress of our city, Niki M. Fytidou, passed away on 27 May
It is with great sadness that the Limassol Municipality informs you of the passing of Niki M. Fytidou, a prominent figure of our city, whose name is associated to the sports history of Limassol.
Her funeral will be held at the church of Ayios Nikolaos in Limassol on Wednesday, 27 May 2020 at 2.00pm. Funeral expenses will be paid by the Limassol Municipality.
Limassol Mayor, Nicos Nicolaides will bid the final farewell to Niki M. Fytidou on behalf of the city the Municipal Council.
She inherited the sporting spirit from her father, Michalis Fytidis, an athlete who served as a GSO official for a number of years, and the philanthropic spirit from her mother, Christina Fytidou, a benefactor who always helped those in need.
Niki Fytidou was literally born and raised in the GSO. Her name was given to the “Fytidio Sports Centre – GSO” following a generous donation to the Limassol Municipality of a plot of land located right next to the existing GSO area. This donation was followed by other donations to the Limassol Municipality, which led to her being attributed the title of Great Benefactress.
As a GSO athlete herself, Niki M. Fytidou excelled in the field of discus throw and held a number of important records throughout her career. In 1955, she was honoured together with other GSO athletes, as well as actors of the city’s sports clubs and refugee sports clubs that have relocated to Limassol due to the circumstances, in an event organised by the Limassol Municipality in honour of all those who made out city proud in the field of sports.
A low-key person with a dynamic personality, she stood by several athletes and was behind many charitable activities. Niki Fytidou identified her name with the sporting spirit and the love for her city.
The Limassol Municipality will organise a series of events and activities in honour of Niki M. Fytidou.
