Press Conference on Limassol – European City of Sport for 2020
The Limassol Municipality expresses its excitement and satisfaction for having been designated as a European City of Sport for 2020. We would like to thank the European Sports Organisation ACES EUROPE for the confidence they placed in our Municipality, which we will honour by putting forth the greatest effort to turn our city into a model and an example of how a sports city should be.
The award of the title of European City of Sport brings new challenges and opportunities for the Municipality and constitutes a powerful motivation when it comes to identifying ways to further enhance and upgrade grassroots sport in our city.
Within this framework, our Municipality has prepared a plan of actions and milestones for 2020. This plan consists of the following main pillars:
• Opening and closing ceremony
• Further improvement of the Lemesia event with the addition of new sports.
• Creation of a Beach Sports Centre (it is noted that in 2020 the Fytidio Sports Centre – GSO will be reopened and the new AETOS stadium will be built on Sperchiou street)
• Creation of sport hubs in suburbs in cooperation with the CSO.
• Design and construction of infrastructure (new swimming pool, multipurpose stadium, water sports centre etc.)
• Attracting and hosting sports conferences in our city
• Promotion of sports tourism in cooperation with the Deputy Ministry of Tourism.
To make the 2020 event a success, the Limassol Municipality proceeded to build strategic partnerships with the relevant Ministries and Bodies, to enhance and support the Youth and Sport Committee and the Sports Office of our Municipality as well as to create a network of volunteers to help organise the various events and activities.
Everyone in the Municipality, and in particular the Chairman and the Committee on Youth and Sport, the responsible Municipality officials and the Sports Office are working hard to organise the most spectacular events during the European City of Sport year.
We promise to work hard to deliver a pioneering and exemplary European City of Sport for which we can all be proud.
