28-07-2020

The said traffic management system will take effect in January 2021 and is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion. The measure was announced yesterday, 28.07.2020 during a meeting held in the presence of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Yiannis Karoussos at the Limassol Town Hall as to present the proposal. The Mayor of Limassol, Nicos Nicolaides, stated that the Municipality and the Ministry are promoting measures, in a coordinated and decisive manner, to solve the acute problem at the traffic junction of Ayia Fyla and 1st of April str., afflicting thousands of citizens travelling to and from Ayia Fyla. The Mayor pointed out that this specific measure is the first to be implemented from a series of 7 measures - short-term, medium-term and long-term - which were defined in a road map and aim at reducing peak-hour traffic congestion.

In the Mayor’s opinion, the most important measure is the establishment of an improved Public Transport system by adding more bus routes from Ayia Fyla to Limassol and by implementing park and ride systems north of the bypass. He reiterated the political will of the Municipality - a political will shared by both the Minister and his Ministry - to promote consistently and decisively all actions, so that the traffic problem that has been plaguing so many people for so many years is finally alleviated.

For his part, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, stated that the simulation of the study for the installation of traffic lights at the junction has shown that there can be an immediate improvement at this traffic junction by reducing the required routes by 57%. At the same time, he pointed out that the 2021 budget includes a provision for the installation of traffic lights at other roundabouts as well, if deemed necessary. He further explained that the traffic lights will be placed in the Ayia Fyla junction, mentioning that this traffic management system is implemented in Cyprus for the first time and that it is a temporary measure which will be evaluated at regular intervals over the coming years.
