Statement of the Mayor of Limassol on Ferry line linking Cyprus and Greece

29-01-2019

For years we have supported the need for setting up a ferry line linking Cyprus to Greece. In 2009, negotiations between the Ministry of Communication and Works and the competent Ministries of Shipping and Transport of Greece had reached an advanced stage, without however producing any results.

We are pleased to see this matter coming to the fore. We will strongly support this effort for those same reasons that go beyond the creation of a simple ferry line and have a wider national significance.

The most appropriate ports for the reinstatement of the ferry service are those of Limassol and Pireaeus. These are the two largest ports of both countries with developed infrastructure and services.  Limassol, which was the most popular Cruise Port in the Mediterranean in the 1190s and 2000s, has numerous great advantages.

In addition to the exceptional passenger halls, the port features a well-organised supply system, bunkering facilities, repair and maintenance units (shipyard and machine shop) as well as other facilities for passengers.

Since keeping costs down is crucial for the success of the Cyprus - Greece ferry line, the geographical proximity of the ports is of particular importance for the viability of the project (3 hours less for each sailing route, less fuel and less expenses for shipping companies).

The Cyprus – Greece ferry line matter is one that should be taken seriously into consideration and should not be met with other purposes or actions not based on documented facts.
