Limassol claims European City of Sport title

12-11-2019

One of the biggest goals set by the Limassol Municipality with the creation of the Sports Office was to claim the European City of Sports title for 2020 by ACES Europe.

The Sports Office proceeded to carry out the required study and take the necessary actions to the above end and following the approval of the Municipal Council the application procedure was completed. It should be noted that Limassol is the first city in Cyprus to ever claim this European title.

This important and internationally recognized title, if awarded to our city, will bring many significant benefits to Limassol. We will automatically join a European network of cities, while channels of communication and cooperation will open with great prospects in the field of sports and when it comes to promoting an active life for citizens.

Additionally, this title greatly contributes in securing European funds since it is considered an added advantage. The aim of the Sports Office is to raise funds in order to enhance the further development of sports and the unit “Exercise and Citizens” in our city.

Part of the city evaluation process is the visit of an ACES EUROPE delegation to Cyprus. Two representatives of the committee will be visiting Limassol from November 18th to 20th where they will convene with the Limassol Sports Office on its plans to establish Limassol as “European City of Sports 2020”.  The delegates will also be given an inspection tour at the various sports venues of the city which will be followed by a press conference on our candidacy.

If our city wins this title it will be significantly promoted in Europe, as the award of the title will take place at the European Parliament on 10 December 2019 in the presence of MEPs, Mayors and many other officials.
