LIMASSOL designated European City of Sports for 2020

The Limassol Municipality expresses its excitement and satisfaction for the designation of our city as a European City of Sports for 2020. We would like to thank the European Sports Organisation ACES EUROPE for their trust and confidence in our Municipality, which we will honour by putting forth our greatest effort to turn our city into an example of how a sports city should be.  

Claiming the title of European City of Sports, a title of great importance, was one of our Municipality’s aims and its attainment will mark the beginning of an essential upgrading of sports facilities in different areas of our city.

The ACES Europe President, Mr Gian Francesco Lupattelli, in a letter to the Mayor of Limassol, Nicos Nicolaides on 25.11.2019, formally announced to him the decision to award the title to Limassol and congratulated him on the award as well as on the city’s vision and strategy presented to organisation by the Municipal Sports Office.  

As stated by the ACES Europe President, the Limassol Municipality with the actions it has taken in the field of sports fulfilled the basic criteria to be designated as a European City of Sport. Determinants of the ACES Europe’s decision were the sporting events organized in our city, the accessibility of the residents to sporting facilities, the measures taken to promote sports in schools, the communication campaigns to promote sports tourism and sports in general.

Mr Nicolaides and his team will attend the official ACES EUROPE award ceremony on 10 December 2019 at the European Parliament in Brussels.

Over the next period, the Mayor and the City Council will set out and present the steps and actions to be taken following this great success.
