Limassol Municipality and CLDC to “build” over 600 new housing units
The foundations for the largest housing project ever undertaken in Cyprus with the involvement of a Municipal Authority, of a total value of over €100 million, were laid today by the Municipality of Limassol and the Cyprus Land Development Corporation. The agreement reached will lead to the construction of hundreds of new housing units in Limassol to meet the needs of low-income families, students and young couples.
For this purpose, three municipal plots will be used (two in Ayios Nicolaos and one in Ayios Ioannis), where the first public housing units were built in the 1940s under the then Mayor Ploutis Servas. In these three plots, of a total area of 31.081 m2, 600 modern housing units of various sizes will be built based on strict specifications that will ensure a high level of quality of life for the residents.
“Today is a historic day for the Municipality of Limassol and our city. After three years of efforts, the vision has become a reality. Today, the efforts of the Municipal Council for affordable housing are being concretized”, stressed the Mayor of Limassol, Nicos Nicolaides, while speaking at the presentation of the new housing program. “The whole project”, he added, “is designed on the basis of the principles of sustainable development and environmental planning, in order to provide long-term economic, social and environmental benefits, not only for vulnerable groups, but for the whole city, for today’s and future generations.”
In his statements, the president of CLDC, Marios Pelekanou, opens the market of affordable rents, something that was also the goal of the Organisation. He explained that with this cooperation, the CLDC will now fill the gap and be able to serve low-income households. The houses will be all energy-efficient and will have much lower maintenance costs than housing units already on the market.
The Minister of Interior, Nikos Nouris, said that the signing of the agreement in question between the Limassol Municipality and the CLDC represents a historic day for our country, pointing out that this is the largest housing project to be built with the participation of Local Government.
