Limassol Municipality creates environmental neighbourhoods

2-08-2019

The Limassol Municipality has already launched a call for tender for the creation of the first environmental neighbourhood in the Zakaki – Omonia area, which in essence consists of two parts.

With this project, the Limassol Municipality hopes to create environmental neighbourhoods and roads in order to substantially upgrade and improve the quality of life of the area’s residents. The program will gradually include neighbourhoods from all districts of the city, starting with three neighbourhoods in the districts of Ayios Spyridonas, Omonia and Ayios Nicolaos. The project provides for the redevelopment of selected roads that are connected to green spaces and schools, including the creation of bicycle paths, organised parking spaces and areas rich in green. Special road signs will be installed and measures to reduce traffic congestion will be taken to make these neighbourhoods more human, safer for children and more attractive. The environmental neighbourhoods will serve as an example for further expansion in the future.

In general, the environmental neighbourhoods are one of the projects aimed at upgrading our city’s neighbourhoods. The strategic objective of neighbourhood development is being implemented through public consultation. The Municipality informs citizens and asks for the public’s opinion on how to improve its quality of life. The attention of the Municipality turns to the suburbs, to give them a share of the city’s development.

The construction work for the first neighbourhood – provided that the planned timetables are met and nothing unexpected occurs in the bidding process – is expected to begin around October 2019 and to end, always referring to the first neighbourhood, within the first half of 2020.

The cost for each neighbourhood will amount to €1.000.000 and will be covered by Municipality funds.
