Autonomous Composting units for Urban Areas (ACUA)

30-04-2018

The Municipality of Limassol participates in the ACUA program headed by the TEI of Crete as a coordinating partner with a view to the development within the urban network of a system for the collection of produced organic waste (food and plants) and their processing (partially or fully) in the same site, without causing any nuisance.

According to the European Legislation (Waste Directive 98/2008) all Member States are required by 2020 to have set up a separate collection system, for at least 10% of the organic waste produced. The ACUA program proposes the installation of Automatic Composting Units. The units are self-contained, closed composting units, with no odour or leaking, operating with minimum human intervention, since they feature their own monitoring software and can be placed anywhere, with their size varying according to their use.

The program goals include the reduction of organic waste ending in waste bins, the savings from reducing waste truck use and waste management costs, the protection of the environment and the creation of incentives (reduction of the ever increasing waste collection fees) for the citizens to develop a sorting at the source programme.
