Limassol is very likely to be awarded the title “European City of Sports” for 2020.

The city of Limassol is considered a “very strong contender” for the designation of the 2020 European City of Sports, according to representatives of the competent European body ACES Europe, who attended yesterday the press conference held by the Limassol Municipality on the official announcement of its nomination.

More specifically, as stated by Romanos Antonopoulos, ACES Europe representative, “Limassol is a strong contender for the title. We carefully studied the Municipality’s file and followed up with interest the Municipality’s presentation, thus answering any questions we may have had.”

“What is left now is to tour some of the city’s facilities to see for ourselves the quality of the sports facilities and venues”, he said, adding that what he is interested in “is not just to give a title, but to determine whether a Municipality has a vision and a strategy and a future and I realise that this is demonstrated by the actions of Limassol officials”. He also said that the main criteria for the nomination of the European City of Sports relate to the sporting events organised, the accessibility of residents to sports facilities and the communication campaigns for the promotion of sports and sports tourism.

Welcoming the representatives of the organisation, the Mayor of Limassol, Nicos Nicolaides, said that claiming the title of European City of Sports was one of the biggest goals set by the Limassol Municipality upon the establishment of the Sports Office and Limassol constitutes the first City in Cyprus to claim this title. “The title of European City of Sports will give a lot of impetus to the further development of mass sports in our city and the even greater improvement of sports facilities and infrastructure in Limassol”, Mr Nicolaides said.
