Blue Limassol Forum 2020 “Sustainable Coastal, Marine & Maritime Environment”

25-05-2020

Amidst the pandemic, the Limassol Municipality is investing in “Blue Economy”. Aiming at highlighting Limassol’s character as an important regional shipping hub, protecting the marine environment and sustainable development, the Limassol Municipality and Frederick University jointly organise the webinar “Blue Limassol Forum”.

“Limassol is facing great challenges today, which have become even greater in wake of the pandemic crisis. Challenges such as the protection of the sea and our coasts and the environment in general, achieving sustainable development through the utilization of the potential of our seas and coasts and in particular through ensuring a dynamic maritime and shipping agenda for competitiveness and job creation. These challenges are the essence of the blue economy and the primary goals of the policies of a Blue Limassol”, Limassol Mayor stated, speaking today at a press conference.

The Mayor, who took the initiative to implement this new institution, also pointed out that the “Blue Limassol Forum is a forum of broad base and participation. All those involved (shipping professionals, environmentalists, port authorities, academics and students) in the maritime and blue economy have a place and a say in this. This webinar is a forum for the wider world, for all citizens”.

The head of the Shipping and Commerce Department of Frederick University, Dr Angelos Menelaou, also stressed that the “complex reality which shapes the management of environmental issues, especially those concerning multifaceted and interdependent ecosystems, such as the maritime one, require a collective and multidisciplinary approach”.  He added that during the first webinar that will be held the following Friday, “environmental issues and challenges will be discussed, while the socio-economic dimensions of the activities taking place in the city of Limassol, especially those relating to the coastal front and the wider coastal area, such as the development of the hydrocarbon sector, will be showcased.”

The first “Blue Limassol Forum” is to be held on Friday, 29.5.2020 at 5:30p.m. under the title “Sustainable Coastal, Marine & Maritime Environment”. Due to the restrictive measures, the forum will be held in the form of a webinar. The first registrations have shown that the webinar has generated a strong interest and a great number of participants is expected. Finally, the webinar will be held under the auspices of the President of the Republic and will be addressed by experts from Cyprus and abroad.
