Urban projects underway for Limassol districts

25-06-2020

The first of a number of urban projects that will upgrade the quality of life in the districts of Limassol is currently underway. Early next year, the construction of the football stadium (widely known to Limassolians as the “Eagle Stadium”) in the parish of Apostolos Andreas will be completed. The stadium, which will meet all FIFA requirements, will be equipped with artificial grass and will host football matches and training sessions of Division D teams. It will feature stadium seats, fencing, locker rooms, a first aid room, sanitary facilities and infrastructure for people with disabilities, a storage room, parking spaces, as well as field lighting, a sprinkler system and electromechanical installations.

Works are expected to begin within next month and the project is to be delivered in January 2021. As provided for in the contract signed last March, the cost of the project amounts to €894.752,75 plus VAT with CSO having already granted an amount of €500.000, while an additional amount of €240.000 was approved and is to be paid.

While presenting the project, the Mayor of Limassol, Nicos Nicolaides, thanked the CSO for the support, adding that “we look forward to the implementation of other projects in Limassol, this year’s European City of Sport”. He stressed that “this project is of great significance as it is the first of a number of projects to be carried out for the communities of our city”. As Mr Nicolaides stated, “after more than three years of preparation, the implementation of a number of projects to upgrade the districts of Limassol is now underway”, including:

•      The creation of two Green Neighbourhoods in Ayios Spyridonas and in the area of Omonia – Zakaki. Within the next month, a call for tender will be issued for the construction of the project.

•     The regeneration of the core of the Ayia Fyla area

•     The creation of an event venue in the settlement of Ayia Fyla.

•     The creation of a Green Neighbourhood in Ayios Nikolaos area and other projects to be carried out in Limassol districts.

“Upgrading the districts of Limassol was not an empty promise. It was a commitment currently being carried out with the implementation of specific projects based on specific planning and design”, pointed out Mr Nicolaides.
